צִיץII m. (b. h.; preced.) 1) something glistening, foil. Tanḥ. Vayetsé 12 (describing the Teraphim) … מביאין וכותבין על צ׳ זהכוכ׳ they get a firstborn man and slaughter him …, and write the name of a spirit of uncleanness on a golden plate, and put the plate under his tongue with sorcerous ceremonies Esp. the highpriests front plate. Succ.5a צ׳ דומה כמין טסוכ׳ the front plate was something like a gold foil ; Sabb.63b. Zeb.88b צ׳ … עזות פנים the plate procures forgiveness for sins committed by effrontery. Gen. R. s. 71 בזה צ׳ ובזה צ׳ in this (the tribe of Levi) is the sheen (of the high priests frontlet), and in that (the tribe of Judah) is the splendor (of the crown, Ps. 132:18); a. fr.(Pl. צִיצִין. Tosef.Sot.III, 4 ed. Zuck. בצ׳ with fineries, v. צִלְצוּל. 2) blossom. Gen. R. s. 53 (ref. to Is. 40:8) יבש … ונבל צִיצוֹ the flower of Abimelech was dried up, and his blossom faded (his procreative faculty was lost); Yalk. Is. 309.Pl. צִיצִים, צִיצִין. Sabb.145b (ref. to Is. 27:6) אלו … עושין צ׳וכ׳ this refers to the scholars in Babylonia who create blossoms and flowers for the Torah (revive learning); a. e. 3) filament, thread, thread-like shred, fringe. Ib. 131a Ms. M., v. צוּץ.Pl. as ab. Ib. 94b; Tosef. ib. IX (X), 12 צפורן … וצ׳וכ׳ a nail, and shreds (of skin) the largest portions of which are severed from the body.
